We love online learning. Especially when we're able to bring great classes like this one, right to you. Using Zoom as our online video conferencing platform, you can take this class from anywhere.

Cozy, Fuzzy, Foot Socks

Following the River City Yarns "Fuzzy Foot Sock" pattern, we will share with you tips and techniques for knitting and then fulling (aka felting) a pair of warm, cozy and durable wool slippers. You will learn the same techniques used to knit cuff down socks, including making a traditional heel flap and gusset and a shaped toe. You'll learn about gauge, "base yarns" that felt and "add in yarns" for creative effects, as well as how to “full” your wool fibre (with a washing machine or by hand) to make a thick felt like fabric. Optional: you can experiment with using "add ins" such as mohair for a soft slipper with a halo.

A detailed handout, including the Fuzzy Foot Sock pattern will be provided a day before class starts.

Our next session takes place on Thursday, April 25, starting at 11:00 am PDT, 12:00 pm MDT, 1:00 pm CDT, 2:00 pm EDT, 3:00 pm ADT. This class will be recorded in case you are unable to attend the live session.

This is a 3 hour class, with time provided for participants to work along. The slipper may not be completed in class but all of the required techniques will be covered and participants can revisit the handout to finish their project.

Please Bring:

  • Completed Pre-Work (see below).
  • Yarn: 200 grams/ 400 meters of worsted weight, 100% natural wool (no superwash) such as Cascade 220 (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 100g; 200m), Rowan Kid Classic (70% Wool, 22% Kid Mohair, 8% Nylon, 50g; 140m) or Berroco Lanas (100% Wool, 100g; 200m).
  • Needles: 8.0mm / US 11 knitting needles for working a small circumference in the round: 5 double pointed needles or 1 long circular (magic loop), as you prefer.
  • Notions: A locking stitch marker, tapestry needle, and scissors.
  • Optional: one 25 gram ball of a laceweight, mohair/silk blend yarn (e.g. Rowan Kidsilk Haze) for extra softness and durability.

Skill level: Participants are experienced in working small circumference projects in the round with double pointed needles or magic loop. A small amount of pre-work is required.

Pre-Work (please complete this step before class):

The pattern is written in three sizes: small (medium, wide) for a foot circumference of approximately 7” (9”, 11”) after felting. Choose your cast on number based on the size you’d like to make.

Using worsted weight wool held double, and 8.0mm / US 11 needles, cast on 30 (36, 44) sts loosely. Divide sts evenly over needles and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round and work one of the following cuffs:

  • Slip-on Cuff: work 2 rounds of stocking stitch.
  • Extended Cuff (slipper sock look): work 6 rounds of stocking stitch.
  • Rolled Cuff: work 8 rounds stocking stitch, rolling cuff down when felting.

Leave your work on your needles. We’ll pick up from here in the first session.
