We love online learning. And using Zoom as our online videoconferencing platform, you can take this class from anywhere.

Oh, the things you can do!

A crochet hook is more than just a handy tool for knitters to repair a dropped stitch. Learn how to make a crocheted chain for cording, how to crochet cast on to your knitting needle for a beautiful edge that matches your bind off or for a provisional cast on. The chain stitch can also be used for embellishment on your knitted fabric. We’ll also try out single crochet stitches for edgings, for seaming, buttonholes and for steeking or folding your knitted fabric.

Our next session of this class takes place on Thursday, March 28 at 11:00 am PDT, 12:00 pm MDT, 1:00 pm CDT, 2:00 pm EDT, 3:00 pm ADT.

Skills required: participants should be comfortable with knit and purl stitches. No previous experience with crochet is required.

Materials:

  • Bring your knitted swatch (see homework instructions).
  • Yarn: two small amounts (10g or less each) of worsted weight yarns, one yarn should be in a contrasting colour to your swatch. We used Rowan Pure Wool.
  • One length (1 m / 1 yd) of a smooth, non-wool yarn (cotton, linen, acrylic) in a different colour from your swatch. We used Rowan Summerlite DK.
  • Needles: 4.5 - 5.0mm / US 7-8 knitting needles
  • Hook: 4.0mm / US 6 crochet hook
  • Notions: One locking stitch marker, scissors, tapestry needle (for weaving in ends).

Homework:
Using a light coloured, worsted weight yarn and 4.5 - 5.0 mm / US 7 - 8 knitting needles, cast on 36 stitches.
Row 1 (RS): k11, p1, k12, p1, k11.
Row 2 (WS): p11, k1, p12, k1, p11.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for 32 rows. Leave a long tail (approximately 4 times the width of your swatch) and bind off with a smooth, non-wool yarn (cotton, linen, acrylic) in a different colour. Tip: the easiest way to count your rows is to look at the knit stitches on the WS of your work! If possible, please wash/soak your swatch and lay flat to dry. This will make your swatch easier to work with in class.

Barb and Cynthia

Barb Barone (she/her) and Cynthia Hyslop (she/her) are the dynamic, Canadian, sister-duo behind Yarniversity by River City Yarns, their online education platform and website. Their YouTube channel also provides tutorials, tours, and interviews with designers, dyers, and makers.

These sisters have extensive experience in corporate training, management and presentation. But it was their experience as yarn shop owners that honed their skills for teaching fibre crafts. For over 20 years, they've been educating and supporting their customers and have a knack for helping you to feel welcome and at ease in their classes.
