What It's All About

This stunning hat was designed by the Scandinavian duo Arne & Carlos for Rowan. We love its beautiful Nordic inspired Fairisle design. Worked with only two colours, we think it’s a great introduction to colourwork and when you work it up in Rowan Felted Tweed held together with Kidsilk Haze, the result is pure luxury!

Our colourwork Baa-ble hat has been enormously popular with our students and so, in honour of Arne & Carlos’s upcoming visit to River City, we thought we’d add a new colourwork hat class, this time with one of their designs! You will learn how: to use both hands (left and right) to knit in two colours across each row, to catch up floats on the inside and to avoid “puckering” in the patterning. You’ll also gain experience working from charts and learn how gauge, blocking and colour choices affect your stranded colourwork projects. A copy of the pattern is included in your fee!

Pre-work Required

With 3.75mm needles and your background colour (must be the ball of Felted Tweed if your other ball is Kidsilk Haze), cast on 100 stitches. Join to work in the round (make sure your stitches are not twisted.) Work 11 cm of K2, P2 ribbing for bottom of hat.

Please bring:

  • your pre-work,

  • two sizes of knitting needles for knitting in the round (dpns, short (16”) circular or long circular for magic loop – your choice) in 3.75mm and 4.0mm,

  • the usual knitting notions (tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure and stitch markers),

  • Yarn: one shade of Rowan Felted Tweed (one 50 g ball) and a contrasting shade of Rowan Kidsilk Haze (one 25 g ball). Or if you’d prefer, you could use two contrasting shades of Rowan Felted Tweed instead of combining it with Kidsilk Haze.
